Traffic Safety Unit

A primary duty of the Troy Police Department is to provide for the safe and efficient movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The department seeks to fulfill this duty through educational programs, the enforcement of traffic laws, and by assisting the city Traffic Engineer with issues related to roadway design and signage.

Although all police officers share in the responsibility for these duties, the complex nature of traffic issues often requires the attention of highly trained, specially equipped officers. The Traffic Safety Unit, which is part of the Special Operations Section, is assigned the responsibility of coordinating the Department’s response to traffic related issues.

Traffic Safety Unit officers investigate accidents, provide speed enforcement in residential neighborhoods, identify accident causing violations and target them for enforcement, enforce motor carrier regulations, supervise school crossing guards, and make educational presentations.

One of the most innovative and useful pieces of equipment utilized by the Traffic Safety Unit is the Radar Trailer. The trailer is equipped with a visual speed display and an on-board computer system that records traffic volume and speed measurements. It is deployed throughout the city in response to citizen complaints involving speed and traffic volume. The visual speed display reminds motorists to slow down. The data provided by the on-board computer is used to assign traffic enforcement officers and assists traffic engineers in identifying traffic patterns.

If you wish to report a hazardous traffic situation, request the services of the Radar Trailer, or need additional information, please call the Traffic Safety Unit at 248-524-3427.
