Green Space in Troy

The City of Troy has installed signs on 11 undeveloped park parcels. These parcels are undeveloped and are for public use or passive recreation. Signs were installed on these properties to highlight and bring awareness to the amount of greenspace the city owns. The lots are not for sale and have no plans for development at this time.

Importance of Green Space

On Tuesday December 5, 2017 the Troy City Council directed City Administration to host a study session. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the process, to determine if Civic Center proposals for redevelopment will be considered, opportunities and strategies for public engagement, and opportunities and strategies for green space preservation. Maps demonstrating various open space and green space areas , as well as additional project information and meeting notes is available below.

The Parks and Recreation Board conducted a special meeting on January 11, 2018 at 6 pm in the Council Boardroom to discuss the green space initiative. A subcommittee was initiated and the Parks and Recreation Board nominated and appointed Tim McGee to be the Chairperson of the Green Space Subcommittee

The Troy City Council has asked the Green Space Subcommittee to:

  • Define “open space” and “green space” as it relates to the city
    - Open space: Any parcel of land that is undeveloped and has no structures including parking lots,
veteran's plaza. Open space does include green spaces.
    - Green space: Public and privately available land with vegetation or areas allowing recreation or
       aesthetic purpose.
  • Analyze the current city inventory of both developed and undeveloped parks
  • Identify open land parcels not owned by thecity (i.e. Troy School District, State or county ownership and individual or corporate ownership)
  • Research surrounding communities as to what their ordinances outline
  • Make appropriate recommendations to enable the Troy City Council to adopt an appropriate ordinance.
