Log Cabin

1840

This one-room home depicts pioneer life in 1840s. The fireplace provided light, heat and a place to cook meals. The settle, a wooden bench and storage chest with the high back was kept drafts away from backs and feet. Mother did handwork while rocking a baby that was safely cradled behind the wooden fence in the mammy Bench. Parents slept in the rope bed while the children slept in the loft on straw mattresses covered with quilts.

The hand-hewn logs and bark-covered ceiling beam are original components of this cabin, which was built in Monroe County around 1840. These elements were reassembled here in 1981. Newer materials were used for the roof, floor, and fireplace.
